I'm new at this but if you go to Vince's Alpha site at

     http://www.santafe.edu/~vince/pub/Alpha/

you will find some directions for owners of 68K machines.  I have a PPC
but I did scan through the instructions and it does seem to relate to the
problems you're having. Hope this helps!
