Subject: (La)TeX and used character sets
Hi to all,

Thank you for this kind word and for the first explanation.
And here is my second question -- obvious for me, but perhaps not for most
of you.
My MacOS 7.5.5 is partially localized -- special character set called
"Croatian" of Chicago font is used to display menus and submenus.
For this reason I see Z* instead of diftong AE, S* instead of copyright
symbol and so on in Alpha's LaTeX mode. But into the (La)TeX document is
inserted the combination of 7-bit characters (string) for diftong and / or
copyright symbol.
I would like, first, correct the displayed characters in the
"International" and "Miscellaneous" submenus;
and, second, I would like to add special characters used in the Slovene
language -- thus I would be able to type them directly from my localized
keyboard. I would like to press the key cap for Z* and the correct string
should be inserted into the (La)TeX document.
All special characters I need are listed in the "ISO Latin 2" character
set, used for SGML.
My professor of topology is prepared to help me "globally", because he
persuaded me to use (La)TeX, but he uses TeX systems on PeeCee. For this
reason I only need the technical details, *where* and *how* to insert the
appropriate "commands" in Alpha itself.
Slovenian Mathematical Society prepared some files for this -- I assume
that I could copy them and convert the line endings from IBM to Mac and use
them, if placed into the correct folder inside of OzTeX or Alpha folder.
Any suggestions?
And two different questions:
a.
I could successfully TeX "User's Guide Alpha LaTeX Macros. Version 4.0" and
"Alpha LaTeX Menus. Version 3.2t" But I could not TeX the file
"latex_defs.tex", which is in the same folder. The following message was
displayed by OzTeX:
-----
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (no format preloaded)
**&LaTeX latex_defs.tex
(latex_defs.tex
LaTeX2e <1996/12/01>
! LaTeX Error: \usepackage before \documentclass.
See the LaTeX manual or LaTeX Companion for explanation.
Type H <return> for immediate help.

What should I do / change?
b.
On the page 9 of the "User's Guide Alpha LaTeX Macros. Version 4.0" from
July 1998 is stated:
"The following paragraph is out of date at present".
Is this still true? It seems to me that this could be related with my
intention to add special characters.
Thank you for your patience with me.
Respectfully,
Igor
