I was using 7.2.1b12, which explains the problem I reported in my original post. I think Jonathan's idea of a separate mailing list for Alpha Users is excellent. Alpha is a pretty complicated program, and I for one can't always tell whether any problem I experience is due to something in the code, or (as is usually the case) something I'm doing wrong. It would be nice to have a place where I could ask the ubiquitous "dumb question." (Hopefully some of my students are reading this! ) Despite having used Alpha for quite a while, there are some simple things that completely defeat me, which I've refrained from asking here because they just don't seem appropriate. I don't understand TCL at all, and most of what's discussed on this list goes over my head. While I'm about it, I may as well take the advice I give my students and ask some of my stupid questions regardless: i) Why does Alpha sometime refuse to uncomment paragraphs with a message that says I must select the entire paragraph, including trailing end, in order to uncomment a region? I keep trying to match my understanding of the words `entire paragraph' to the program's, but this contest always ends the same way: with my uncommenting the paragraph by hand. ii) Is there a way to find and replace all occurrences of a given string with just one dialog box and keystroke? I want to be able to search the whole document from the beginning, even if I happen to be in the middle. I can usually do this with the find command followed by replace, but it would be nice to do it all in one go. And for some strange reason this doesn't always catch all occurrences -- it misses the first one produced by the find operation. Much obliged for all your help, and for having supported Alpha at all. It's a great program. -- From: V. Vatsal Department of Mathematics University of British Columbia Vancouver, BC Canada V6T 1Z2 vatsal@math.ubc.ca http://www.math.ubc.ca/~vatsal
