With all due deference to your fierce loyalty to Pete and his code, 
things have been changed for reasons (not always good reasons, but 
reasons). This is a good example. Bugs have certainly been 
introduced, but Vince and others have not been hacking the code just 
for the hell of it. The recent discussion of diff mode is another 
good example. Periodically reexamining Pete's four- to 
fourty-five-year-old code is probably worthwhile, but simply 
reverting to his procs is usually not a viable option.

Mind you, I don't think I've ever twiddled in my life and don't care 
how this particular feature behaves.
