There is no way to separate the two concepts with key selection 
(without adding additional mode-switching key sequences, which is 
what Bare Bones does). You can have one or the other, but not both.

There is no room for compromise. The two models are antithetical to 
each other and one of them is the way that Alpha has worked all 
along. As I've said several times, I have no problem with providing 
/other/ ways of doing it[*], but we're not going to break the one we 
have now. [Before you object, since you don't like the way it works 
now, you're not a very good judge of whether your proposals are going 
to break it].

[*] As soon as somebody write the code. I don't think it requires 
core changes, but I could be wrong.



Enough. I understand what you want. Stop explaining it. When somebody 
comes up with some code, we can debate that, but there is no point in 
discussing it any more now.
