One idea for a key for (i) could be Escape, i.e., after an Escape the
_next_ shift+(whatever+)arrow would contract instead of extending the
selection. This would admittedly be awkward if you want to contract by more
than one step, but I believe the most common reason for contracting is that
one has extended the selection one step too far and in that situation an
escape is kind of logical.
