FAQ: How do I uncomment a line

Several users have written in to ask how to uncomment a line, claiming that the Command-Option-D shortcut advertised in the Text > Uncomment Line menu command doesn't work.

In MacOSX 10.2 (Jaguar) and 10.3 (Panther) some new OS keyboard shortcuts now conflict with those which Alpha has used for many years. Command-Option-D is one example -- while this has been mapped to Text > Uncomment Line in Alpha, OSX 10.3 has now taken over this shortcut to toggle hiding the Dock. Another example is Command-`, which in many keyboards is an OS mapping to "Rotate Windows."

These conflicts are known issues, and have been reported in Bug# 1202 [] -- the AlphaTcl development team will be exploring how to update Alpha's shortcuts to be compliant with 10.3 and is working on the necessary changes. These will hopefully be included in the next release.

In the meantime, you have three options.

(1) Dive into AlphaTcl source files and manually change some of Alpha's menu shortcuts yourself -- not recommended for the faint-hearted.

(2) Follow the instructions found in the Help > Keyboard Shortcuts help file [*checkout*/alphatcl/Help/Keyboard%20Shortcuts?rev=HEAD] in the "# User Defined Key bindings" section to create new shortcuts using the core commands Bind]] or [[ascii. You can save the new binding commands in your "prefs.tcl" file -- select

Config > Preferences > Edit Prefs File

to create it.

(Tip: If you first select

Config > List Global Bindings

you will open a new window containing keyboard shortcut "recipes" that you can use for your own shortcuts.)

(3) Disable these OS shortcuts for all applications, including Alpha. Select

Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse

and click on the tab named Keyboard Shortcuts -- you can then turn off those items that are in conflict with the Alpha shortcuts that you need in order to perform your basic editing tasks.

Option 3 is recommended as the easiest solution here, but disabling the global OS shortcut will affect all applications. If you want more help with option 1 or 2 please send a query to one of the AlphaTclMailingLists?.
