Older Releases

This page contains the information about releases as it looked around 2006. Don't be fooled by words like 'new'...

Looking for a new version of AlphaX ?

AlphaX is available for Mac OS X.

The second final, public release of AlphaX 8.0 (8.0.2) has been released. AlphaX comes in three different flavors, for Mac OS X versions 10.2.x, 10.3.x, and 10.4.x:

  • Mac OS X 10.2.x : [http://www.purl.org/net/Alpha/releases/AlphaX/8.0.2-Jaguar.dmg]
  • Mac OS X 10.3.x : [http://www.purl.org/net/Alpha/releases/AlphaX/8.0.2-Panther.dmg]
  • Mac OS X 10.4.x : [http://www.purl.org/net/Alpha/releases/AlphaX/8.0.2-Tiger.dmg]

(Jaguar: 13.4 mB download ; Panther: 14.3 mB ; Tiger: 10.9 mB.)

Unlike previous beta versions of AlphaX, there is no need to download and install the "Tcl" software library. Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) includes a Tcl distribution (version 4.7) in the Library of the operating system; the Jaguar and Panther distributions of AlphaX include a Tcl interpreter embedded within the application. Each flavor listed above is upwards compatible, i.e. the Jaguar version should also work in Panther and Tiger.

  • Older AlphaX releases are available at [http://www.purl.org/net/Alpha/AlphaX]

Looking for a new version of Alpha8 ?

Alpha8 is available for Mac OS 8.x and 9.x. It is not recommended for the MacClassic environment of Mac OS X; use AlphaX instead.

The first final, public release of Alpha8 8.0.2 has been released. You can download it from here:

  • Mac OS 8.x and 9.x : [http://www.purl.org/net/Alpha/releases/Alpha8/8.0.2.sea.bin]

Follow the installation instructions found in the unpacked archive.

This is not only the first public release of Alpha8, but also its last. All future development work will be devoted to AlphaX and Alphatk.

  • Older Alpha8 releases are available at [http://www.purl.org/net/Alpha/Alpha8].

Looking for a new version of Alphatk ?

Alphatk is available for Windows, Unix, and Mac OS X.

The current released version of Alphatk can be found at the [http://www.purl.org/net/Alpha/Alphatk] web site. This site also includes information about older releases.

Beta/Development versions:

Stable versions:

If you are using MacOSX, please see the NotesForMacOSXUsers.

Using expired beta releases

Beta releases of Alpha8/X expire a fixed number of days after they are built (c.f Changes - Alpha [http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/alphatcl/Help/Changes%20-%20Alpha?rev=HEAD]).

While it is preferred that you use the the latest (i.e. non-expired) release available, it is sometimes useful to run older releases. To override the beta expiry check at startup, create a folder (or file) next to your Alpha8/X application named Don't expire Alpha beta (exactly).
